The Five Koshas — Layers of Who You Are

The Five Koshas — Layers of Who You Are

(Upanishads — Taittiriya)

You think you are one thing. You are actually five.

The Taittiriya Upanishad describes five sheaths — koshas — that envelop the Atman like layers of an onion.

The outermost is Annamaya Kosha — the food body, the physical body. This is the layer most people think is “me.” The body that eats, sleeps, moves.

Inside that is Pranamaya Kosha — the energy body, the vital body. The layer that animates the physical. When prana leaves, the physical body becomes a corpse. Pranayama works at this layer.

Inside that is Manomaya Kosha — the mental body. Thoughts, emotions, reactions, memories. Most of your suffering happens in this layer. Meditation works here.

Inside that is Vijnanamaya Kosha — the intellect body, the wisdom layer. The discriminating intelligence. This is where discernment lives. Jnana yoga works here.

And innermost, just before the Atman itself, is Anandamaya Kosha — the bliss body. The deep layer of natural joy that underlies all other experience. In deep sleep, you touch this layer — which is why you wake up feeling refreshed even without dreams. Samadhi is a conscious entry into this layer.

The Atman is none of these five. The Atman is the one who wears all five. Like a person wearing five coats and forgetting that the person underneath the coats is not the coats.

Spiritual practice is not about destroying the koshas. It is about loosening identification with each one. About recognizing: I have a body, but I am not the body. I have emotions, but I am not the emotions. I have thoughts, but I am not the thoughts. I have a wisdom faculty, but I am not even that.

What remains when all “I am this” dissolves?

Pure, unlimited, undivided awareness.

That is you . Always was. Always will be.
