The Witness Who Never Moves

The Witness Who Never Moves

(Ashtavakra Gita — Chapter 1)

Ashtavakra speaks to Janaka with the fearlessness of a mother who knows her child is perfect even when the child cannot see it.

He says: You are the pure witness. You are Consciousness. Your only bondage is that you think you are the perceiver.

Let me break this open for you.

Right now, as you read these words, something is reading them. Call it your mind if you like. But behind the mind — something is watching the mind read. That something cannot be the mind, because the mind is being watched.

Go behind the mind. Who is back there?

Don’t think an answer. The answer is not a thought. It is a recognition.

Ashtavakra says this witness is like the sky. The sky never gets wet when it rains. It never burns when the sun blazes. Clouds come and go, storms come and go — and the sky is completely untouched.

Your awareness is that sky.

Your emotions are weather. Your thoughts are clouds. Your life circumstances are seasons. All of it passes through the sky of your awareness. None of it touches the sky.

Now, you might say: but I feel touched. I feel hurt and angry and tired and happy. Yes, you feel all of that. But who is noticing the feeling? Is the one who notices the hurt — hurt?

This is the key question. Don’t answer it immediately. Sit with it while you cook, while you drive, while you drink your chai.

One moment of genuine recognition that you are the witness — not the witnessed — is worth more than years of mechanical practice.

Ashtavakra is not asking you to meditate your way to the truth. He is pointing directly at the truth and asking you to simply look.

Look now.
